Gorak Shep and Kala Pathar
Previous days: Thak Nak to Gorak Shep
The toughest part of Three Passes Trek is over. We are well acclimatised and can start thinking of climbing Island Peak – yes, that’s the plan! But let’s first enjoy the proximity of Everest Base Camp, Everest and Lhotse View and lazy evenings.
There are two must visits during your stay in Gorak Shep: Kala Pathar Peak (5643 m) and Everest Base Camp. Both worth visiting, but if you are short in time, go to Kala Pathar only. Why? This is the best place to see Everest and even more breathtaking Lhotse face.
In order to catch the sunrise over Everest, you have to wake up around 3AM and start walking, it takes about 1.5h to reach Kala Pathar Peak.

Everest Base Camp
After coming back from Kala Pathar, we had a proper breakfast and some rest in the lodge. It does make sense and is completely doable to do Everest Base Camp the same day with 2 hours walking one way. And yes, this will be the a little bit more crowded place than the rest 🙂 Maybe except Namche Bazaar. Even with our completely off beaten path and off season trip, we were able to catch some tourists there.
